Looking to a Greener Future on Global Recycling Day

Tuesday, March 18th, marks Global Recycling Day, a day on which we at Greengage are reminded of the incredible power of recycling and its critical role in shaping a sustainable future. We understand the importance of taking real, measurable action to reduce our collective environmental footprint, which is why recycling is a key component of our ECOsmart certification process.

The theme for Global Recycling Day 2025 is #RecyclingHeroes. It is an opportunity to celebrate the heroes of recycling—the individuals, organisations, and communities who are leading the way to protecting our planet. From everyday recyclers to large-scale organisations, these heroes are helping to turn waste into valuable resources, contributing directly to a more sustainable future.

A Planet at a Crossroads

Every year, the Earth yields billions of tons of natural resources and at some point, in the not-too-distant future, it will run out. Our climate is already showing signs of distress: the last decade has been the hottest on record, and we are now amid a climate emergency of unprecedented proportions. Rising global temperatures, melting ice caps, widespread wildfires, and rampant deforestation are the dire consequences we face if we don’t take swift and substantial action.

The effects of this climate crisis are far-reaching. It threatens our communities with increased poverty, forced migration from displaced populations, job losses, waste mountains, and the disappearance of vital natural habitats. The time to act is now and recycling plays a pivotal role in turning the tide.

A Global Issue That Requires a Unified Approach

Global Recycling Day was created in 2018 to raise awareness of the importance of recycling in preserving our planet’s primary resources. The mission of this day, as set out by the Global Recycling Foundation, is:

  1. To tell world leaders that recycling is simply too important not to be a global issue. A coordinated, global approach to recycling is urgently needed. Governments, businesses, and individuals must all play a part in creating a unified, efficient recycling system that supports the sustainable use of resources worldwide.
  2. To inspire individuals and organisations to think of resources, not waste. We must all shift our mindset from one of disposal to one of reuse and recycling. Only by recognising the true value of recycled goods will we be able to repurpose them in a way that supports a sustainable future.

As we celebrate Global Recycling Day, we encourage all businesses, large and small, to assess their sustainability practices and take action to integrate more eco-conscious policies into their daily operations.

Recycling to Create a Circular Economy

At Greengage, encourage our community to invest in a circular economy—a model where resources are kept in use for as long as possible, through recycling, repurposing, and reducing waste. Recycling is an integral part of this model, and it holds the key to reducing the environmental impact of the products we use every day.

Each year, the ‘Seventh Resource,’ the materials we recycle, saves over 700 million tonnes in CO2 emissions. This is projected to increase to one billion tonnes by 2030. When we consider this in the context of the global climate crisis, the importance of recycling becomes abundantly clear. By investing in recycling, we can reduce our reliance on finite natural resources, mitigate climate change, and protect ecosystems.

As a certified eco-conscious company, Greengage is proud to support organisations that are committed to making sustainability a priority. Whether it’s a hotel rethinking its waste management practices or an event venue measuring and reducing its carbon emissions, we’re helping businesses take measurable steps toward a greener, more sustainable future.

A Greener Future Starts with Us

At Greengage, we’re proud to play a part in helping organisations become more sustainable by offering training, certification, and event carbon measurement services.

By working together, we can create a world where recycling is the norm, not the exception.

This Global Recycling Day let’s all take a moment to celebrate the #RecyclingHeroes in our communities and workplaces. Let’s continue to build a future where we see opportunity, not waste, and where every resource is treated with the respect it deserves.

Happy Global Recycling Day from all of us at Greengage!
